Dental veneers are a hugely popular cosmetic treatment due to their power to completely transform a smile within a matter of weeks. But are they too good to be true? Will getting veneers make your teeth sensitive or cause other problems? The good news is that veneers are quite safe, and they are unlikely to harm your oral health. However, some temporary sensitivity is a common part of the treatment process. What causes this issue, and what can you do about it? This blog post explains.
What Causes Sensitivity with Veneers?
There are a few different reasons why veneers may cause sensitivity. The most common one has to do with the tooth preparation process. In order for your veneers to fit well, your dentist will have to remove a sliver of enamel. This can stress the nerves in your teeth, and it allows outside stimuli to cause greater irritation.
Sensitivity can also occur if there is an issue with the placement of your veneers. If they do not fit correctly, they may place extra pressure on your teeth. This can lead to continual discomfort.
A third possible reason for sensitivity is an improper bite. As you adapt to your veneers, your upper and lower teeth might work together differently than they used to. Therefore, you may experience some soreness and a heightened response to certain stimuli.
What Can You Do about the Sensitivity?
It is encouraging to note that sensitivity related to veneers is usually temporary. For most patients, it wears off within 1 – 2 weeks. Long-term sensitivity might signal a problem with either your teeth or veneers, so it is a good reason to talk to your dentist.
While you are waiting for the sensitivity to go away, there are some steps you can take to minimize your discomfort:
- Use desensitizing toothpaste that does not contain harsh or abrasive ingredients (abrasive toothpaste could scratch your veneers).
- Avoid hot, cold, sticky, and hard foods. Eat a mild diet that will not irritate your teeth.
- Take a mild over-the-counter pain reliever if necessary.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
- If you tend to grind your teeth at night, wear a custom mouthguard to protect both your enamel and your veneers.
Veneers can cause some sensitivity, but most patients are surprised by how easy the overall treatment process is! Ask your dentist if you have any questions or concerns about what to expect while you are transforming your smile.
