There has been a lot of buzz in recent years about essential oils, which are concentrated compounds extracted from plants. While science is still debating on some of the benefits of essential oils, other benefits are fairly well-accepted — including the ability of some oils to help people sleep better at night. In this blog post, we discuss six oils that may be able to improve the quality of your sleep. We also discuss what you can do if the oils do not seem to be enough to help you get rest you need to feel your best.

Lavender

A study in Connecticut found that participants who inhaled lavender at night experienced more slow-wave sleep, which is essential for relaxing the muscles and slowing the heartbeat. The study participants also reported feeling more energized after sleeping in a lavender-scented room.

Cedarwood

It is commonly believed that cedarwood plays a role in fighting negative emotions, which may help individuals with anxiety to sleep better. It even triggers the release of serotonin, which eventually converts into melatonin — the hormone that is responsible for regulating sleep.

Bergamot

When you inhale bergamot, it may slow your heartrate and your blood pressure, thus preparing your body for sleep. It may also help to lower anxiety and stress levels. There is even evidence to suggest that it has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help to ease various aches and pains.

Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile works on the same part of the brain as anti-anxiety drugs. It may help to ease negative emotions and even act as a mild tranquilizer. In fact, in one study with 60 elderly participants, the ones who ingested chamomile extracted enjoyed significantly higher-quality sleep than those who took the placebo. Inhaling chamomile might have a similar effect.

Neroli

When neroli is used in combination with lavender and chamomile, it can contribute to a tranquilizing effect. It may also contribute to lucid dreaming.

Ylang-Ylang

It is believed that ylang-ylang can help individuals to release negative emotions that may interrupt sleep. For the best effects, you might try combining it with a few of the other oils listed in this article.

What If the Oils Do Not Work?

If aromatherapy does not seem to be doing anything to improve the quality of your sleep, it may be in your best interests to seek advice from a medical professional. You might have a disorder, such as sleep apnea, that is making it impossible for you to get the rest you need to feel energized each day. After appropriate testing and diagnosis, you can work with your doctor to design a treatment plan to get you on the path to better sleep.
